JASON: The Pit (Part 1)
“So when Joseph arrived, his brothers pulled off his beautiful robe and threw him into the pit.” (-Genesis 37:33-34 NLT)
Ouch. Finding yourself like that in a Pit unexpectedly can be the worst. Sudden disaster, sudden betrayal, or sudden disappointment can take the wind out of you and leave you feeling buried alive. The Pit is the pits. And the problem with the Pit is its alluring temptation to just stay there.
Depression calls your name, and the comfort of escaping into yourself outweighs the effort of climbing back out and rejoining the real world.
Bitterness rings out, and the joy of hatred outweighs the labor of having to forgive.
Mistrust wraps its arms around you, and the security of self reliance outweighs your need for companionship.
Worry whispers in your ear, and the imaginary world of worst case scenarios outweighs taking the hard journey back to the reality in front of your face.
Whoever you Pit-dwellers are out there, I know that depression and bitterness and mistrust and worry are so intoxicating to you right now. I realize that they seem to be like those mythical, inescapable Sirens. But just for a minute, won’t you join me in drowning out their seduction so that you can the hear the quiet Voice of God inside of you?
Listen. Hear God in a hushed tone say, “I’ve got you. You can get out of this WITH ME. Let’s climb out of this thing together, one moment, one step, one day at a time. Get up! What are you waiting on. Let’s do this NOW!”
